Charles Ghigna (b. 1946) - Pseudonym: Father Goose

 

Charles Ghigna is a poet, children's author, and nationally syndicated feature writer who helps promote the love of children's literature by speaking at schools, colleges, conferences, and libraries. Ghigna is the author of more than thirty award-winning books from Random House, Disney, Hyperion, Simon & Schuster, Scholastic, Abrams and other publishers. His books have been featured on ABC's "Good Morning America," National Public Radio, selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club, and received the Parents' Choice Book Award. Ghina's poems appear in the national SAT and ACT student testing materials.

Charles Ghigna was born on Long Island. When he was five, his family moved to Fort Meyers, Florida. Ghina became interested in poetry in college and while still a student, his poem was published in Harper's magazine.

Ghigna graduated in 1969 from Florida Atlantic University. From 1974 to 1993 he was poet–in–residence at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham. He has served as poetry editor of The English Journal for the National Council of Teachers of English and has presented his poetry programs at the Library of Congress, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the American Library in Paris and at hundreds of schools, colleges, conferences, libraries, and book fairs throughout the U.S. and overseas. Ghigna lives in Homewood, Alabama with his wife, Debra, and their son, Chip.

Ghigna's poems for children have beem published in Cricket, Highlights for Children, Ranger Rick, Ladybug, Children's Digest, Children's Playmate, Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, Child Life, Guideposts for Kids, Lollipops, Hopscotch, Pockets, Pre-K Today, Storyworks, Turtle and in many anthologies including The 20th Century Children’s Poetry Treasury (Knopf), Knock at a Star: A Child’s Introduction to Poetry (Little, Brown), and Read A Rhyme Write a Rhyme (Knopf), as well as in numerous other anthologies, textbooks, newspapers, journals and magazines.

His poems for adults have appeared in many popular magazines including The New Yorker, Harper's, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, Ladies' Home Journal, McCall's, Writer's Digest, The Saturday Evening Post, Guideposts as well as in many other magazines, literary journals, anthologies, and textbooks including The Creative Writer’s Handbook (Prentice Hall).
